Create a Personal Strategic Plan for 2014…and Beyond
Know What You Want. Be Determined to Get It.
In my experience of sharing Napoleon Hill’s philosophy with others, the number one reason people fail to make it work for them is they don’t know what they really want (in writing) and they haven’t created a strong determination-a burning desire-to achieve it.
Napoleon Hill revised his philosophy a few different times over the course of his career. Some of the principles in his list stayed the same. Some changed. Some stayed the same-but under different names. For example, in his first major work Law of Success, the first principle was “A Definite Chief Aim.” In Think and Grow Rich, it was “Desire.” In his final list of 17 principles (the Science of Success course), it was “A Definite Major Purpose.”
In every iteration of his teaching, knowing what you want and having a burning desire to achieve it was at the top of the list. The first step. In my experience, this is where most people have a problem. They haven’t really sat down and fully identified what they want in life. They may be able to identify specific goals (which is a great first step), but not an overriding Definite Major Purpose.
Interestingly enough, even though Napoleon Hill taught the importance of having a Definite Major Purpose, to my knowledge, he never really identified the mechanics of how to get clear on it. That may be one of the reasons many people have difficulty applying his philosophy successfully. They don’t know how to get a clear mental picture of what they really want and he doesn’t explain just how to do it.
When you get this piece right, the rest of the philosophy becomes a lot easier.
Your Personal Strategic Plan is Your Definite Major Purpose
This is where creating a Personal Strategic Plan helps. When you create a Personal Strategic Plan as outlined by Gary Ryan Blair, this becomes a crystal clear statement of your Definite Major Purpose. You may summarize that plan in a short, one sentence statement, but behind that statement will be a clear understanding and strong foundation that will serve as your guide for setting and achieving your goals-goals that lead to the attainment of your Definite Major Purpose.
Watch the video below and then take action to begin putting together your own Personal Strategic Plan. I would suggest that you do this before setting another goal. Why? Because after you have defined your personal strategic plan, the goals you choose to achieve may be different from the goals you would choose without your plan. What good is climbing the ladder of success if it’s leaning against the wrong building?

Before You Plan Any More Goals, Plan Your Life
I wish I had discovered this program years ago. I can see that I would achieved more with less effort.
Gary Ryan Blair’s Personal Strategic Plan is a mini-seminar on personal strategic planning. There are 12 components to the Personal Strategic Plan. As you can see, this is a lot more detailed than just saying “I want $1 million by _______”:
- Your Vision Statement
- Your Legacy Statement-how do you want to be remembered?
- Your Mission Statement
- Your Personal Philosophy Statement (as much as I’ve studied personal development material, I could not articulate my philosophy until I went through this program)
- Defining and Measuring Your Core Values
- Developing Your Personal Code of Ethics
- Developing Your Lifetime Objectives and Goals
- Developing Your Plans, Strategies, and Timelines
- Your Organizing Themes
- Choose Your “Personal Board of Directors”
- Measuring and Monitoring Performance
- Developing Your “Why”
When you define your Personal Strategic Plan to this level of detail, you have a very clear Definite Major Purpose.
If you had a personal strategic plan for your life that included these 12 elements, can you see how much easier it would be to set and achieve your goals? And the goals you set would be the right goals for you. My suggestion to you is to not set another goal until you create a comprehensive strategic plan that includes these 12 elements.
The program comes with a 2 hour MP3 and 7 Different PDFs that cover the entire program. One of the PDFs covers the components of the Personal Strategic Plan in detail. One gives you a sample strategic plan you as an example. One is an interactive PDF where you create your strategic plan. And there are assessments and forms that will help you brainstorm what to create in your plan and for goal setting and achieving.
This is a very comprehensive program.
Once you have your plan written, you can go through the program again and again to review and refine it. Personally, I review my full plan at least once a month-sometimes more frequently than that. I review my one statement summary several times each day.
Napoleon Hill speaks about the importance of having a Definite Chief Aim or Definite Major Purpose. This is a practical application of this principle-on steroids.
Whether or not you get this specific program, do yourself a huge favor and develop your Personal Strategic Plan now. You need that plan whether you use this program or not. But, this program will make it much easier than if you try to do it on your own without a guide.
