Frequently Asked Questions
What are Power Affirmations? How are they different from “regular” affirmations?
Power Affirmations are like regular affirmations in the sense that they are positive statements in the first person, present tense of a quality or characteristic that you want to build into your character. Affirmations can general or specific. By general, I mean that they can be focused on a general characteristic like confidence, health, happiness, relationships, prosperity, etc. By specific I mean you can use them to achieve a specific goal like a specific job or amount of money.
The affirmations I have created for my website are general affirmations as I do not know specifically what you want to create for yourself. One of the primary characteristics of the Power Affirmations that I have created is the amount of research that I conducted to create them. To create my Power Affirmations, I studied several self-help books, audio programs, and seminars to identify the most important ideas. Then I turned the ideas into affirmations. So, my affirmations are educational, inspirational, and motivational. They help you take these ideas and, through the principle of repetition, turn the ideas into habits that you begin to act on automatically. It’s the actions you take that create the results, not the affirmations themselves.
Do affirmations work?
Affirmations work-if you do. The purpose of the affirmations is to help you create a “success consciousness.” In other words, to consistently think thoughts of success and develop success habits that inspire you to take the ACTIONS that get you the results you want.
Affirmations are a form of positive thought mixed with positive feeling directed toward a positive goal. So, affirmations work because thought works. If you only use the affirmations a few times, you probably won’t get the results you want. If you don’t mix the affirmations with the positive feelings of faith and belief, they probably won’t work. If you don’t take positive action, they won’t work. Taking positive, consistent action is what directly brings your results.
How long do affirmations take to work?
That depends on many different factors:
1. Is your goal internal or external? If your goal is internal-like to have more confidence, feel more happiness, etc., that can be achieved relatively quickly. It’s all within you. If your goal is to attain a certain amount of money or material possession, that can take longer. Think of your affirmations mental or spiritual seeds. Some seeds grow into a mature plant very quickly. Some seeds take longer. In the physical world, we can predict how long it will take for a seed to germinate. In the mental and spiritual world, we can only guess.
2. How often do you repeat the affirmation? Generally speaking, more repetitions are better.
3. When you repeat your affirmation, how intense is the positive feeling of belief? The more positive and intense the feeling is, the better.
4. How clear is the mental image of what you desire? The clearer your mental image, the faster you will achieve your goal.
5. Is your affirmation in harmony with universal law? For example, I personally don’t believe that an affirmation to win the lottery is in harmony with universal law. That’s because winning the lottery is trying to get something for nothing. Money should be the reward for services rendered. Also, an affirmation for winning the lottery is really based on a poverty consciousness-that the only way you can get the money you desire is by winning it. The reality is you can have all the money you desire simply by finding ways to provide useful service to masses amount of people. With today’s technology, it’s easier than it ever has been in human history to provide useful service to thousands of other people.
It should also be mentioned that trying to force your desires or will on others is not in harmony with universal law. So, an affirmation to make a certain person to want to be in a romantic relationship with you is not likely to be effective. But affirmations for you to be a more loving person and to develop characteristics that are attractive to other like minded people so that you attract the relationship of your dreams is in harmony with universal law. In one instance, you are trying to change someone else. In the other instance, you are improving yourself. There is a big difference between the two.
There are other factors, but I believe these are the most important.
How do I choose my affirmations?
Follow your intuition. Follow your feelings. Choose affirmations that are in harmony with what you want to create for yourself.
What is the best way to use affirmations?
The ways that I have personally found effective are:
1. The mirror technique. Here you stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye and repeat the affirmation. This has the advantage of creating a biofeedback loop.
2. Writing out the affirmation. Here, you write out your affirmation on paper several times a day.
3. Recordings-either recordings you make yourself or recordings by others. I have found recordings to be hands down the fastest and most effective way to use affirmations. That’s because recordings don’t get tired-it’s easy to listen to them over and over and over again. More repetitions create faster results.
Should I use the past, present, or future tense? Should I use first, second, or third person?
I have effectively used all three combinations, but my preference is first person, present tense. A simple formula specific affirmations that I got from Bob Proctor is “I am so happy and grateful that…” For example, “I am so happy and grateful that I am now earning ________________ coming from multiple sources as I provide useful service to thousands of people everyday.”
How specific should I be in my affirmation?
If it is for a specific goal or material item, be very specific with both the item and the date. Make certain you have a clear mental picture of what you want and hold that picture in your mind as often as possible. For the date, take your best guess. “…on or before ____________.” If the date comes and you have not achieved your goal, keep the goal but re-evaluate the date. If you feel like changing your goal, do so. But recognize that changing your goal means you weren’t really committed to it in the first place. If your goal is a worthy ideal, it really doesn’t matter how long it takes to achieve it.
How many times should I repeat my affirmation everyday?
At a minimum, once in the morning, once at noon, and once before going to sleep. But ideally, as many times a day as possible. That’s why I like to use recordings. Recordings make repetition a lot easier.
Do I still need to take action?
YES!!! Only action will ultimately create results. But you want to take inspired, focused, and intelligent action. Taking action does not necessarily mean working hard. It means taking thoughtful and strategic action. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are two of the richest people in the world. While they both took massive action, it doesn’t mean that they physically worked for every dollar they earned. That would not be effective or strategic. They used their minds to create their wealth. They used their brains, not their brawn. They created businesses that are an extension of themselves that provide useful service on their behalf.
Here is what Napoleon Hill said about hard work:
“If you are one of those people who believe that hard work and honesty, alone, will bring riches, perish the thought! It is not true! Riches, when they come in huge quantities, are never the result of hard work alone! Riches come, if they come at all, in response to definite demands, based upon the application of definite principles, and not by chance or luck.”
In other words, hard work-massive action-may be part of the formula for success, but hard work alone won’t bring riches. If hard work alone brought huge quantities of wealth, then we could all get rich by digging ditches. Or working 24 hours a day. Hard work must be mixed with intelligent thought to be effective. And that’s where affirmations help.
The purpose of the affirmations is to help you maintain your focus, motivation, and belief so that you take effective action. Using affirmations or autosuggestion is only one of the success principles that Napoleon Hill identified in “Think and Grow Rich.” Autosuggestion helps you use the other principles more consistently and effectively.
Should the recordings I use be in my own voice?
Here’s a few questions: do you ever listen to audiobooks? Seminars? Speakers? Does audio (live or recorded) from these other voices have a positive impact on your thinking? In my experience, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Audio programs of all sort have completely changed my live. I generally listen to audio programs for hours a day as I do other things. What I find happens is that when an idea they communicate hits me, I end up repeating it to myself several times in order to maximize the impact. So in the end, their voice becomes my voice in my head anyway.
It’s the same thing with affirmations recorded by myself or others. If you resonate with the ideas, and through repetition you end up repeating them to yourself, then they become your voice anyway. In fact, a recorded affirmation is not likely to be effective until you begin to hear it in your head in your own voice.
So, in my experience, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you include using recordings of some sort for getting the most use out of affirmations.
Can I use affirmations while I sleep?
In my opinion, the answer is yes if you use recordings. Because I think the subconscious mind is always awake at some level, listening to affirmations while you sleep can be very effective.
Can using affirmations make me rich?
I don’t think that affirmations by themselves can make you rich, but they are part of the process of getting rich by design. I think that following all of the success principle in “Think and Grow Rich” (including autosuggestion) increases the probability that you will achieve any achievable goal-including attracting material riches in exchange for useful service to others.
Why should I consider buying your recordings?
That’s really up to you. I think that that having a library of non-linear audio recordings that you can download and begin using immediately is a way to get off to a FAST start with affirmations. You can always create your own recordings later. And listening to these recordings on a regular basis will make it a lot easier to write your own affirmations and make your own recordings in the future. That may be one of the greatest benefits of using my recordings. Does that make sense?
